A pioneer in ocean science, IFREMER’s cutting-edge research is grounded in sustainable development and open science. It conducts research and innovation, proposes expertise to protect and restore the ocean, drives for sustainable resource management, and shares its knowledge and data to create new opportunities for marine-friendly economic growth.
Present along all of France’s coastline and French overseas territories, IFREMER boasts 20 locations in the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. IFREMER contributes significantly to the development and the operation of French and European marine research facilities. The Institute interfaces with the French Oceanographic Fleet (FOF), a joint service unit that federates the French oceanographic research marine facilities. Ifremer develops and manages vessels, underwater vehicles, sensors, and other types of cutting-edge technology for ocean exploration and observation from the coast to the deep and from the abyss to the ocean-atmosphere interface.
Well-established in the international scientific community, the 1500 scientists, engineers, and technicians are committed to expanding knowledge on our planet’s last unexplored frontiers. They provide the science we need for informed decision-making and public policy support and the innovation essential for a sustainable blue economy.
Founded in 1984, IFREMER is a French public organization and its budget approximates 240 million euros. It operates under the joint authority of the French Ministry for Higher Education, Research and Innovation, the French Ministry for the Ecological and Solidary Transition, and the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

In keeping with the traditions of French Engineering schools (grandes écoles d'ingénieurs), Centrale Nantes, founded in 1919, trains versatile engineers to a very high scientific and technical level.
